Passing Ceremony of the Île des Faisans 2027

Thu, Jul 29, 2027Hendaye

About

Every year on July 29th, the Île des Faisans (or Île de la Conférence) hosts a unique ceremonial event: the passing of sovereignty between France and Spain.

Nestled in the heart of the Bidassoa River, this tiny 2,200 m² island has embodied an exceptional symbol of cross-border cooperation since 1659. It was here that the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed, ending nearly 30 years of conflict between the two kingdoms, and where Louis XIV met Marie-Thérèse of Austria to seal the peace.

This Franco-Spanish condominium, administered alternately every six months, sees its authorities gather for a solemn ritual. White uniforms, tricolor and red flags, historic speeches, and handshakes: the ceremony celebrates the continuity of a centuries-old diplomatic tradition.

A must-see event to dive into European history and witness a rare moment of diplomacy in action.
